About Anna M Campion, PhD

Experienced Psychologist

I earned my PhD from Ohio University in 2000, followed by a certificate in psychoanalysis from the National Institute for the Psychotherapies in 2022. Over the past 20+ years, I’ve had the privilege of working with individuals across the lifespan and from diverse cultural backgrounds, supporting them through a wide range of emotional challenges. My practice focuses on helping people age 18 and older gain deeper insight into themselves and their experiences—exploring how personal history, relationships, and the broader social atmosphere shape their inner lives. This deeper understanding often allows for more effective management of emotions, improved relationships, and a greater sense of agency. Through a thoughtful and collaborative process, I aim to foster meaningful growth and lasting change.

Find Healing and Growth

Welcome to my practice where I believe that everyone has the ability to heal and grow. I specialize in the use of psychodynamic therapy, which is an empirically-supported treatment. I work with people suffering from a range of psychological problems including anxiety, depression, relationship problems, life transitions, grief, and more.

Frequently Asked Questions

Please reach me at annamcampionphd@gmail.com if you cannot find an answer to your question.

You might consider therapy if you're feeling overwhelmed, stuck, or find that certain thoughts, emotions, or behaviors are interfering with your daily life or relationships. Some people come to therapy to cope with stress, anxiety, depression, grief, or trauma, while others seek support during life transitions or to gain a deeper understanding of themselves. You don’t need to be in crisis to benefit—therapy can also be a space for personal growth, improving communication, or exploring long-standing patterns.

The first session will take approximately 50 minutes. At the beginning of the initial consultation, we will discuss issues of confidentiality and fees. After this, we will explore what brought you to therapy and what you hope to achieve. I'll ask detailed questions to get a thorough picture of your current challenges, past experiences, and therapeutic goals. This evaluation helps us create a clear roadmap for our work together and ensures that the treatment approach is tailored specifically to your needs. I view psychotherapy as a collaborative process that is illuminated by a curious mind.

This a great question with an elusive answer. I’ve seen people who have found what they were looking for in a matter of a few months and others that stay in therapy for years exploring and examining new challenges, even after their initial concerns were resolved. Each person and their needs and desires are unique, but it is a process that generally takes time and effort to improve.

The frequency of therapy sessions can vary depending on your individual needs and goals. For many people, coming once a week provides a consistent space for growth and support. However, if you're dealing with more acute issues or if you're seeking a more intensive approach, such as psychoanalysis, attending 2–3 times per week may be more beneficial. We will work together to find a pace that best supports the process and adjusts as your needs evolve.

I practice what's called psychodynamic therapy, but in simple terms, it's about understanding how we sometimes hide difficult truths from ourselves—and how that self-deception creates problems in our lives. Many of us live by internal rules about how we "should" be, what careers we "ought" to pursue, or what success "must" look like. These rules often mask what we truly want. Together, we'll explore what's authentically important to you, helping you make choices based on your genuine needs rather than external expectations. This approach creates lasting change because we're addressing root causes, not just symptoms.

Different therapeutic approaches have distinct philosophies and goals. While approaches like CBT focus on identifying and changing specific thought patterns and behaviors in the present, psychodynamic therapy explores the deeper 'why' behind those patterns.

For example, when working with anxiety, we'll go beyond managing symptoms to understand where that anxiety originates and what purpose it might serve in your life. We'll examine how past experiences shape your current responses in ways you might not recognize.

This approach is supported by research and considers the whole person—your thoughts, feelings, relationships, life circumstances, and the broader social milieu. Many people seek psychodynamic therapy when they're looking for not just symptom relief, but a more comprehensive understanding of themselves and lasting transformation.

Absolutely—you’re encouraged to ask questions about the therapist. It’s important that you feel comfortable, informed, and confident in who you’re working with. In therapy, it's common for a question to carry more than one layer of meaning. Often, there's the surface-level question and another, less conscious question beneath it. We’ll typically explore both—what’s being asked directly, and what might be underlying it. This kind of dual exploration, of both conscious and unconscious thought, is a recurring theme in therapy.
